March held to mark Road Safety Week

A march has been held in Hulhumale’ Phase I to mark the Road Safety Week.
The march was organised with participation from Hulhumale’ Hospital, Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Maldives Police Service (MPS), Health Protection Agency (HPA), Maldives Transport Contracting Company (MTCC) and other government agencies.
At the launch, Minister of Health, Family and Welfare, Geela Ali said many road accidents are caused by poor safety measures. She stressed that all institutions must work together to reduce accidents. Noting that a large number of accidents occur among people aged between 18 to 35, the minister said prevention efforts can significantly reduce disability and harm.
During the march, participants carried banners and slogans promoting road safety. Awareness efforts included showing accident-related visuals to the public.
Road accidents are increasing in many developing countries, including the Maldives. The Maldives records around 2,500 road accidents annually, causing deaths and disabilities. The government is working on stronger and more immediate measures to address road safety issues before they worsen.
