Members of Parliament of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have forcibly ended today's Parliament session following the passing of the resolution to investigate and take necessary action against former President Mohamed Nasheed for his illegal proceedings.
MPs of MDP raised several point-of-orders and addressed the Parliament administration as ‘traitors’, forcing the session to be brought to an end due to loss of order.
The resolution against Nasheed was passed with the votes of 38 MPs, following which the decision was made to form a seven-member temporary committee to conduct an assessment of the case.
MDP proposed to form a 77-member committee; however, voting for this proposition did not take place as the seven-member committee proposed by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) was passed.
PPM’s Thimarafushi MP Ahmed Shareef included two members of MDP in the seven-member committee, following which MDP requested that their names be waived from the list, indicating that MDP does not wish to be included in such a committee.
Concluding the Parliament session, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim said that the issue of not being able to assign members to the committee today will be dealt with after discussion between the leaders of political parties represented in the Parliament.
Two resolutions were sent to Parliament against former President Mohamed Nasheed while he was President as well. One was in relation to Indian newspapers reporting that Nasheed ‘drank soola sharab’ during a visit to India, and the other in relation to Maldives strengthening bilateral ties with Israel.
Also, Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed has submitted a resolution in relation to Nasheed’s resolution while he was President against recognizing lower courts.
