MDP will not form coalitions with any party: Nasheed

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential candidate and former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that coalition governments do not function well, and that MDP will not form coalitions with any party in the future.
Speaking at the MDP function at Usfasgandu last night, Nasheed said that considering past experiences and the current government’s situation, it is apparent that coalition governments do not work.
“We will not form any coalition. We will remain steady in serving the people.”
Nasheed said that he never believed in coalition governments, and that the citizens also now accept this fact, and that the strongest coalitions are those formed among the people.
He highlighted the conflicts between Members of Parliament of the government coalition as an example of the coalition’s failure.
Nasheed said that the government will face difficulties if the President and Finance Minister do not represent the same party. He criticised the current government in this regard.
He added that in 2008, the people wanted a change of government, and that he would have won the election even if a coalition had not been formed.
Nasheed also criticised the Police for the summon of Mahchangolhi Uthuru MP Mariya Ahmed Didi to the Police office yesterday.
