Defence lawyers have the legal right to corroborate the character of witnesses presented against their case, says former attorney general Dhiyana Saeed.
Dhiyana said this in a tweet on Monday, where she chimed in on the ongoing case at the Supreme Court filed by President Abdulla Yameen seeking to annul the results of September’s presidential elections.
The tweet translates to, ‘The clear choice of the Maldivian people cannot be made void without first allowing the defence to corroborate and attest the character of witnesses”.
Dhiyana also sent out a tweet questioning the integrity of the Supreme Court bench.
"The Supreme Court has rarely been concerned with the merits of a case, it concerns itself with where political expediency lies; who has more political capital and who is best placed to prop them", the second tweet says.
President Yameen is seeking to annul electoral results on the basis that the elections were rigged through elaborate means; such as rings that dispense invisible ink and layers of paper that transfer ink marks made on it to another position.
