Plans being made to extradite Sultan Park bombing suspect

A senior Sri Lankan government official told Haveeru that arrangements of extraditing the suspect Mohamed Ameen, 27, back to Maldives was discussed during a meeting Defence Minister Thalhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu had with senior members of Sri Lanka's defence establishment. "Currently investigations are being carried out by the CID. They have interrogated the Maldivian suspect and have ascertained vital information regarding his involvement in the Sultan Park bombing," he said. "We are working very closely with Maldivian intelligence officials and investigators. We are constantly updating and keeping the Maldivian government informed of any possible leads. Plans are currently being made to extradite the suspect back to Maldives," he said. The high-level Maldivian delegation led by Defence Minister Thalhath Ibrahim arrived in Colombo on Tuesday and left on Friday. Vice Chief of Defence Force Brigadier General Farhath Shaheer, Commander MNDF Central Area Brigadier General Zakariyya Mansoor and Commissioner of Police Ahmed Faseeh were part of the delegation. Mr. Ibrahim and his delegation met with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Interpol had issued a red notice for the suspect Mohamed Ameen of Kariyyaage/Fuvahmulah, who fled the Maldives before the bombing. Sleuths from the CID revealed that Ameen had a fake Maldives and Pakistan passport in his possession when he was arrested at a level crossing in Sri Lanka’s southern town of Payagala. Previously, the government lodged terrorism charges against 16 suspects, including the 10 suspects who fled the country, for their involvement in the attack, which injured 12 tourists.
