Defense Minister Adam Shareef Umar have said that, the government of Maldives has taken necessary steps to ensure that Maldives remain as a hundred percent Islamic country.
Speaking at a ceremony held yesterday near Friday Mosque to mark the 889thanniversary of the day Maldives embraced Islamic, the minister said that one important step taken to protect the religion in Maldives is explicitly stating in the constitution that the state religion is Islam.
“ You can be a Maldivian only if you believe in Allah. No laws that are contradictory to Islam cannot be made in the Maldives. Hence, Islam is protected in Maldives very well” said the minister.
Adam Shareef said that even though some people spread various anti-Islamic messages on social media claiming to be Maldivians, they cannot be Maldivians if they do not believe in Islam. “ Atheists and followers of other religion are not Maldivians. It is very clear from the constitution of the Maldives” said the Minister.
In addition the minister noted that it is mandatory to study Islam and Dhivehi in higher secondary and also that the government is facilitating the study of Islam and Dhivehi to Maldivians living abroad.
