Maldives Vice President Faisal Naseem arrived on Saturday, November 5, in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt to attend the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference.
President’s Office confirms the Maldives second-in-command is accompanied by a high-level delegation of government officials, who are attending the conference.
The UN Climate Change Conference encompasses the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27), the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP17) and the fourth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Paris Agreement (CMA4).
The formal opening plenary conference will be held on Sunday, November 6 at the Sharm El-Sheikh International Convention Center. Maldives identifies COP27 as a significant event for the country to address its sustainable development plans.
Vice President Naseem is expected to deliver the national statement of Maldives at the conference on Monday, November 7.
In line with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s calls for the rights of Small Island Developing Sids (SIDS) and global climate resilience, Maldives unveiled its plan in 2019 to reach net-zero emissions by 2030.
Meanwhile, the island nation has led numerous initiatives to “address and draw attention to the climate emergency, from participation in multilateral institutions to activities at the national level, with a particular focus on promoting the financial burden of resilience building and climate adaptation” for less developed nations.
