Gov’t records MVR 2.1B budget surplus amid spending cuts

The state expenditure has seen a surplus of MVR 2.1 billion as of 17 April, following cost-saving measures.
According to the ministry’s Weekly Fiscal Development, the government received MVR 11.7 billion in revenue as of April 17, which marks an increase of MVR 700 million over the same period last year. The budget deficit stood at MVR 1.6 billion during the same period last year.
During the current period, TGST collection stood at MVR 3.7 billion, green tax collection at MVR 572.5 million and airport development fee collection at MVR 452.6 million. Excluding loan expenditure, the government's expenditure stood at MVR 9.5 billion thus far this year, compared to MVR 12.7 billion in the same period last year.
The overall balance of the budget is calculated by subtracting total recurrence expenditure and capital expenditure from revenue.
