Additional 1.8 MW generator to be installed in Addu City to address power outages

An additional 1.8 MW generator is set to be sent to Addu City next week as part of efforts to provide a long-term solution to ongoing power outages in the connected islands of Addu.
Earlier, on January 17, Fenaka Corporation sent a 1.8 MW generator under an agreement with STELCO, but power disruptions have continued, leading to growing public complaints.
In response, Fenaka stated that significant work has been done over the past two months to address electricity issues and said that a new 1.8 MW generator is expected to arrive and be installed next week.
Additionally, Fenaka has been repairing damaged generators. Last month, the company successfully repaired and restarted one unit.
The second generator is expected to be fully operational before Ramadan ends, while the third will be repaired using imported spare parts.
According to Fenaka, the spare parts required for repairs have arrived in Addu City, and if no further issues arise, the work will be completed by March 10.
The company said that the cause of the latest power outage was due to an unexpected technical fault in one of the generator sets, assuring that repairs are underway and expected to be completed by this afternoon.
To enhance power supply, Fenaka is also working on improving ventilation at the Hithadhoo power plant, which will optimize generator performance. However, some materials need to be imported, and the upgrade is expected to take a month to complete.
Addu City’s connected islands require 12 MW of electricity during peak hours. Currently, 20 generator sets are installed in Hithadhoo, with a total capacity of 26.8 MW. However, several units have broken down, exacerbating power issues since last year.
