The Maldives will present a resolution to renew the mandate of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers during the 62nd session of the U.N. Human Rights Council, underscoring its continued engagement on judicial independence despite no longer serving as a council member.
U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk read out a statement providing an overview of the global human rights situation, at the opening of the four-week session in Geneva.
The Maldives, acting as part of the Core Group on the mandate, will table a combined resolution seeking both the renewal of the Special Rapporteur's mandate and action on a thematic issue concerning the independence of the judiciary and the legal profession.
In its national interventions during the session, the Maldives is expected to address what it described as an escalating trend of human rights violations worldwide. As a member of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the country will deliver statements under several agenda items, including during an Interactive Dialogue with the Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel.
The session, which runs from June 15 to July 7, brings together governments, U.N. officials and civil society representatives to discuss global human rights challenges and responses.
The Maldivian delegation is led by Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Dr. Salma Rasheed. Other members include Counsellor Adam Hamid, Counsellor Uza. Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, Second Secretary Aishath Rayahyn and Attaché Raaidh Saeedh.
The Human Rights Council, comprising 47 member states, is the United Nations' principal intergovernmental body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. Although the Maldives completed its third term on the council in 2025, it has said it will continue to actively participate in deliberations
