MNU Deepens Ocean Studies Curriculum Through Strategic Industry Alliances

The Maldives National University (MNU) has formalised new partnerships with Banyan Tree Maldives and the Olive Ridley Project Maldives as it seeks to advance its leadership in marine and ocean sciences. The memorandums of understanding, signed this week, are designed to expand academic and research collaboration in a field vital to the nation’s environmental and economic future.
The agreements will directly support the university’s College of Fisheries and Ocean Studies, enhancing both the curriculum and the practical training available to students and faculty. University officials described the initiative as a significant step toward strengthening higher education in marine science.
Dr Ahmed Riyaz Jauharee, Dean of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Science, said the MoUs would reinforce the university’s academic offerings and deepen its engagement with marine research. The collaboration, he noted, represents a significant advancement in strengthening the quality and depth of higher education within the field of marine science.
The partnerships are structured to promote joint efforts in education and training, with an emphasis on developing expertise and expanding research opportunities. University representatives expressed confidence that the agreements would yield tangible benefits for both students and staff.
From the perspective of industry, the initiative has also been welcomed. Elias Pertoft, General Manager of Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Dhawa Ihuru, noted the reciprocal value of the collaboration. The agreement, according to Pertoft, is expected to facilitate meaningful advancements for both his organisation and the university.
These developments form part of a broader strategy by the university to raise academic standards nationwide. MNU continues to pursue collaborations with private sector organisations and international institutions, aiming to create interdisciplinary opportunities and strengthen the educational landscape across the country.
