Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Ahmed Nazim has stated that several amendments to existing laws are necessary to reform the judiciary. He made the statement while speaking during the debate for the proposed amendments to the Attorney General's Office Act, during Wednesday’s Parliament sitting.
Nazim said many of the cases pending in the Civil Court are backlogged due to the poorly implemented Civil Procedure Code. To address these issues, the Attorney General’s Office needs qualified and skilled lawyers, he said.
Nazim pointed out that when the Civil Procedure Code was introduced, it was not rolled out properly, and therefore, the mediation processes were disrupted. Nazim said these reforms alone are significant reforms.
The number of cases pending in the Civil Court is more than 4,700 as of end of last year. Of these, about 2,368 were sentencing cases.
The Civil Court completed a total of 5,432 cases last year, an increase of 17.57 percent over 2023, according to the court. While 3,268 disputed cases were concluded last year, 621 undisputed cases were also concluded. A total of 1,543 cases on enforcement of sentences were also concluded.
