His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with His Excellency Lawrence Wong, Prime Minister and Minister for Finance of the Republic of Singapore, this afternoon in Singapore.
During the meeting, President Dr Muizzu and Prime Minister Wong underscored the significance of the President’s ongoing state visit, which coincides with the golden jubilee of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Singapore.
The President and the Prime Minister reflected on the valuable contributions of Singaporean businesses to the development of the Maldives’ tourism industry and discussed economic diversification, particularly through the expansion of fisheries exports to new markets. They also explored potential investments to support the Maldives’ transition to renewable energy, in line with the Government’s target of generating 33 per cent of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2028.
Discussions further covered cooperation in education, including both basic schooling and human capital development, alongside the exchange of technical expertise in urban planning. The two sides agreed that, as small island states, the Maldives and Singapore must deepen collaboration on multilateral platforms to strengthen their collective voice on shared challenges, most notably climate change, which poses a significant threat to low-lying island nations.
The meeting concluded with the President and the Prime Minister reaffirming their commitment to further strengthen the close friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and Singapore.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established on February 20, 1975.
