Imprisoned former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed has given his fingerprint on Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) membership form.
Member of his legal team, Hassan Latheef – who served as Youth Minister during his administration, spoke to “Sun” on Wednesday and said that Nasheed gave his fingerprint last Monday after the membership form was taken to Maafushi Prison where he is incarcerated.
Correctional Service received permission from Home Ministry to allow the membership form to be taken to Maafushi Prison for Nasheed’s fingerprint after heated exchanges between government and opposition party – MDP – over it.
Home Minister Umar Naseer said that Nasheed’s fingerprint could be taken for the form through his lawyers last Saturday after weeks of complaints by MDP over the issue.
Umar had tweeted that MDP had been told to take Nasheed’s fingerprint through his lawyers, and that his lawyers visited him in prison and spent around three hours each day obtaining his signature and fingerprint for various documents.
