Foreign Minister Dr.Mohamed Asim has said that the Maldives has shown the world that small states can have a big impact in making the world a better place.
He said this on a statement released on the occasion of the 51st Anniversary of the Maldives membership at the United Nations.
Minister said that the Maldives joined UN as the smallest nation at a time when many member states questioned the viability of a small state like Maldives, and its ability to contribute.
Dr. Asim acknowledged the role of UN in Maldives over the past 50 years in attained numerous developmental goals. Some mile stones Maldives reached in these years include reduction of infant mortality rate, increase in life expectancy, and democratic and governance reforms. Minister also said that the Maldives graduated out of the LDCs and as well became an MDG plus country.
Minister added that while we celebrate this day today, that the Maldives is convinced that the United Nations continues to be a true, neutral and fair arbiter of best practices and dialogue between nations. Minister also affirmed to remain committed to work with the United Nations to make the world a safe and prosperous place.
