PM Modi pledges to continue with ‘mutually beneficial’ endeavors for Maldives and India

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday vowed to continue with efforts carried out for the mutual benefit of the peoples of Maldives and India.
He made the pledge in a post on X in response to a message by Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu congratulating India on occasion of its 77th Republic Day.
President Muizzu wrote his congratulatory message in the English language, while PM Modi wrote back in the Dhivehi language as he accepted the warm wishes.
“I will continue the joint efforts we are carrying out for the mutual benefit of the peoples of our two countries. I wish for a happy and prosperous future for all Maldivian people,” he added.

In addition to his message on X, President Muizzu also sent separate letters to Indian President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi conveying warm greetings on occasion of India’s Republic Day.
In his letter to PM Modi, President Muizzu recalled with pride the tangible progress the Maldives-India partnership has delivered for the people of both countries.
He conveyed appreciation for India's leadership in the region under PM Modi’s stewardship and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and advancing practical collaboration to serve mutual interests in the years to come.
He also further expressed deep appreciation for India's continued support for the socioeconomic development of the Maldives.
He concluded the letters by extending personal best wishes for the good health and wellbeing of both leaders, and for the continued progress and prosperity of the people of India.
Relations between Maldives and India had been strained in the early days of the administration of President Muizzu, who came to power in 2023 on the back of an ‘India Out’ campaign to expel Indian soldiers from the Maldives. Things deteriorated further after three junior ministers within the administration made derogatory remarks on social media regarding India and PM Modi himself.
But relations were later mended, as officials from both Maldives and India repeatedly expressed keenness to maintaining relations and engaged in several high-level visits – including a visit last year to Male’ by PM Modi to attend Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations.
