A ballot box in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Vaadhoo has been vandalized.
Elections Commission (EC) vice chief Ismail Habeeb said that the culpable individual responsible for the act has already been arrested and handed over to Maldives Police Service. Authorities were investigating the case.
Police said that their active presence at the polling station site in response to the report and added that they have arrested the individual responsible for damaging the ballot box.
Habeeb said that although the ballot box placed at Vaadhoo Jamaluddeen School was damaged, the ballot papers inside remained intact. He assured the public that the ballots would be counted as planned.
A total of 545 voters are eligible to vote in Vaadhoo.
