The Criminal Court has ordered a 15-day investigative detention for a 59-year-old man from Ga. Gadhdhoo, following his arrest for attempting to steal chocolate from a store in Malé.
The court cited sufficient evidence against the man and concerns over public safety as reasons for the detention, which complies with the requirements outlined in the Criminal Procedure Code.
According to the police investigation, officers acted on information regarding the theft attempt at Fantasy Store. Review of CCTV footage from the store showed the man concealing chocolate in his pocket and trying to leave the premises.
Upon apprehension and questioning, the suspect admitted to the attempted theft. Records indicate he has been arrested 29 times previously, with 18 of those cases resulting in detention. His prior arrests include several theft-related offenses.
The court emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and the suspect’s criminal history in its decision to detain him for 15 days during the ongoing investigation.
