President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldivian government's steadfast commitment to promoting football and sports across the nation, emphasising the sport's unique power to unite communities and inspire future generations.
In a statement issued on World Football Day, celebrated every year on 25 May, the President described football as a universal language that bridges divides and brings people together from all corners of the globe.
The President, in his message, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing a healthy lifestyle to the Maldivian people and promoting sports throughout the Maldives. His remarks were accompanied by warm wishes and congratulations extended to football enthusiasts, players, coaches, and all those involved in the beautiful game in various capacities across the island nation.
The President's statement highlighted the government's multifaceted approach to football development, pointing to successful decentralisation efforts made possible through the revised Sports Act. This legislative reform has transformed the landscape of Maldivian football by ending the long-standing practice that restricted first-division competition solely to clubs from Male'. Under the new framework, the entire country has been divided into four distinct zones, with teams representing islands from the atolls now granted the opportunity to compete at the highest domestic level. This structural change has opened pathways for talent discovery and development beyond the capital, democratising access to professional football opportunities.
Infrastructure development has occupied a central position in the government's football strategy. The President noted that the construction of FIFA-recognized football stadiums represents tangible proof of the administration's dedication to the sport's growth. These world-class facilities not only provide appropriate venues for domestic competitions but also position the Maldives as a potential host for international football events. The government has identified the hosting of international tournaments as a strategic priority, recognising that such events provide Maldivian athletes with invaluable exposure to international competition and the experience necessary to compete on larger stages.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed echoed the President's sentiments while offering her own perspective on football's broader societal significance. In her statement marking the occasion, she emphasised that football occupies a special place in the hearts of every citizen in this geographically dispersed nation, serving as a unifying force that connects people across the archipelago's scattered communities.
"Football is not merely a sport; it is an activity that connects people of different ages and cultures from different parts of the world," the First Lady said.
She characterised football as a powerful instrument for empowering healthy, happy, and meaningful lives, transcending its role as mere entertainment to become a foundation for personal and community development.
The First Lady highlighted football's educational dimensions, noting that the sport inherently teaches essential life lessons about good manners, teamwork, discipline, and respect for rules and regulations. She highlighted a vision of World Football Day as an opportunity to cultivate safer and stronger societies through sports, particularly football, thereby encouraging young people to pursue brighter futures anchored in athletic endeavor and community engagement.
World Football Day carries particular significance as it marks its second annual celebration, having been inaugurated in 2024. The designation of 25 May as World Football Day commemorates the 100th anniversary of the world's first major international football tournament, which took place during the 1924 Paris Olympics.
Football unites nations and builds stronger societies, says President Muizzu
