Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the compassion and assistance shown by Maldivians on the day the tsunami hit the country helps renew hope.
Nasheed said this in a statement released by him on the occasion of National Unity Day.
He said that Maldivians showed compassion like never before, and that this helps renew hope because of the generosity and assistance from one individual to another as well as from one island to another. He said that this solidarity is based on our religion, culture and the hope of building a fair society where individual rights are ensured.
“I am with the people of Maldives in commemorating the Maldivians who lost their lives in the tsunami that hit us eight years ago. The disaster brought upon us countless losses and left several Maldivians and our neighbours displaced and in poor conditions. Those memories deserve being commemorated always, and I extend my prayers to those who lost their lives and those families who were displaced and are still trying to recover from the damage.”
The statement said that the benevolence and assistance provided by countries all over the world on that day shows the relations between countries and dependence of people around the world on one another. He urged for unity and successful relations between one another instead of rivalry and animosity towards foreign groups.
