President arrives in Qatar to pay respects to former Qatari Emir

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has arrived in Qatar to convey condolences following the death of former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
The visit is being undertaken on behalf of the people and Government of the Maldives, as well as the President personally, to express condolences to the Emir of the State of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Royal Family and the people of Qatar following the former Emir's passing.
Upon his arrival in Qatar, President Dr Muizzu was received by Qatar's Minister of Transport, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Thani. He was accompanied by the Maldives' Ambassador to Qatar, Adam Shareef Umar.
According to the President's Office, President Dr Muizzu is scheduled to attend the official mourning ceremonies being held in Qatar. Leaders from several countries are also expected to attend the ceremonies.
Qatar has been a longstanding development partner of the Maldives, providing assistance across a number of sectors, including tourism, education and economic development through investment in various projects.
Following the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Maldives ordered the national flag to be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect. The former Emir's death was announced by the Qatari Royal Court on Sunday, and funeral proceedings were held the same day.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani assumed power in 1995 and is widely credited with laying the foundations for Qatar's modern development. During his reign, he transformed the country into one of the region's leading economic and diplomatic powers, strengthening its influence across the Islamic world and internationally.
