Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) launched the project to build two 14-storey tower buildings in Hulhumale, under the state’s social housing project “Hiyaa”, on Monday.
MACL awarded this project to Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG), who is currently developing the new runway and cargo terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA). BUCG took on this new project for MVR 400 million.
After the ceremony held to officially commence the work, MACL’s managing director Adil Moosa told Mihaaru that the project was given to BUCG under the “selective bid” policy. The two towers to be built in Hulhumale would provide approximately 180 apartments for MACL employees.
Adil said that they initially intend to finish four floors which would be given to the government. He added that the target is to finish the first four floors by this year and complete the rest by next year.
There will be one-room and two-room apartments in the towers according to Adil. He stated that they plan to sell the apartments with the cheapest prices possible and that they are trying to make easier payment plans.
Economic minister Mohamed Saeed, who took part in the ceremony, said that MACL is one of the first companies that had decided to take part in the Hiyaa project. He urged MACL to finish the towers and hand over the apartments to employees as soon as possible.
