President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Monday has appointed Aishath Asna Hamdhee, G. Silvaruge Aage, as the new Deputy Governor of the Maldives.
She was appointed in accordance with the Maldives Monetary Act, through parliament’s approval.
The parliament had unanimously voted to give her approval during Sunday’s sitting which had an attendance of 73 MPs, including Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members.
Prior to her appointment as the Deputy Governor, Asna had filled multiple positions at the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) for 17 years, including a tenure as the Managing Director of the Financial Sector Development of the central bank.
The Deputy Governor’s position became vacant after Ahmed Imad, the previous Deputy Governor, resigned from his position on April 17th. Imad had resigned as he objected to MMA printing money, which was related to the central bank buying land from Hulhumale’ for MVR 15 billion.
At the time of his resignation, the parliament had already begun efforts to have Imad dismissed.
The new Deputy Governor, Asna had attained a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Nottingham in 2014, and had completed her Bachelor’s of Business Administration (Honors) from University of East London in 2007. In 2005, she attained a Diploma in Business Administration from UK’s Association of Business Executives.
She is also the recipient of multiple international accolades related to financing, and is the author of several research papers.
