Maldives Democratic Party’s Chairperson Ali Waheed claims the ruling party’s new faction “Z PPM” has formed.
His statement، came in the form of a tweet، in which he said that today is a “historical date” and today is the “birth of Z PPM.”
Ali Waheed’s Twitter statement had also noted that former President of Maldives and PPM’s De-Facto leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom، along with Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon and Home Minister Umar Naseer، and Ilyas Ibrahim – a minister in President Qayoom’s regime will progress towards the ‘formation’ of DRP.

MDP Chairperson Ali Waheed’s statement comes amid when Parliament members had voted in favor of the Constitutional Amendment to set age-limit for Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates between the age 30 to 65.
A total of 77 members out of the 79 members present in today’s Majlis seating had voted in favor of the bill. While former PPM member، South-Galolhu constituency member Ahmed Mahloof voted against it.
PPM’s leader Al-Ustad Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had been strongly against the new Constitutional Amendments of setting the specified age-limits for Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates. Meanwhile، Viber message screenshots – possible conversation between Gayoom and PPM Parliamentary Group leader Ahmed Nihan had become a widespread piece of information in various social media platforms.
In his claim، President Maumoon stated that، setting a maximum age-limit for Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates is not a political practice of any nation throughout the world، while he strongly affirmed that such an amendment is not only ‘unnecessary’ but will tarnish the positive image of President Yameen.
However، PPM had supported the government and collaborated with MDA in issuing a three-line whip in support of the Constitutional Amendment.
Hence today’s Majlis seating had not seen Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon، son of former President himself as well as mid-Maafannu MP Asma Rasheed in the quorum.
