The High Commission of India and Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) in Malé, started celebrating the International Day of Yoga in Maldives today and will continue till 21st June,
The opening ceremony was organized at the Maafaanu Youth Centre thismarning at 8.30 a.m. The activities include a “Yogathon” – series of Yoga lecture-cum-demonstrations at various venues in Male’, Hulhumale, Villingili, Thulushdoo, Hurraa, Dhifushi and Himafushi Islands.
Speaking at the event, High Commissioner of India H.E Shri Akhilesh Mishra thanked the Maldivian authorities and the people of Maldives for their co-operation and expressed confidence that the event would be a huge success due to the immense popularity of Yoga in Maldives. Dr. Savitha Harish, ICC Yoga Teacher conducted lecture-demonstration on Yoga.
Yoga is an invaluable gift of ancient Indian tradition. It is a discipline based on a subtle science and focuses on bringing harmony between mind and body. Recognizing the growing relevance of Yoga, the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga by consensus on December 11, 2014, through a resolution which was co-sponsored by a record 177 countries, including Maldives.
The High Commission of India invites all Maldivian citizens to join the celebrations on International Day of Yoga. A list of venues where the events would be held on 18th, 20th& 21st June is enclosed. All events are free and open for public.
The Indian Cultural Centre in Male holds free daily yoga classes and many Maldivians regularly participate in these classes.
