The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has appointed two new judges to the High Court: former Civil Court Judge Ustaz Abdullah Jameel Moosa and former Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Mohamed Shahid.
The appointments come following the elevation of two High Court judges to the Supreme Court, creating vacancies in the High Court bench.
According to the JSC, the appointments were finalized during the Commission's 27th meeting after conducting interviews with all candidates who expressed interest in the High Court judgeships.
Judge Abdullah Jameel Moosa holds a Bachelor of Sharia and Law with Honors from Kulliyyatul Dirasatil Islamiyya. He has over 15 years of judicial experience, previously serving as Magistrate of L. Dhanbidhoo Magistrate Court from 2003 to 2009 and as a Civil Court judge from 2009 to 2019. After resigning from the bench, he practiced as a legal advocate.
Mohamed Shahid also holds a Bachelor of Sharia and Law with Honors from the Islamic University of Maldives. He worked as legal counsel for Honey Weltrading Company Pvt Ltd between 2018 and 2023 and most recently served as Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Home Affairs before applying for the High Court position.
Their appointments aim to strengthen the judiciary and fill the leadership gaps following recent Supreme Court appointments.
