Gaafu Alifu atoll Vilingili Council has urged expeditious investigative efforts into potential negligence by the island’s hospital, and demanded upgrading health services in the island.
The local council’s demands have followed in the wake of the unfortunate demise of a mother and her newborn in the island, which according to their family have been a gross negligence on the part of the hospital and relevant authorities.
Many have been criticizing the hospital and the overall health system in the country following the incident.
A statement issued by Vilingili island council, called out to take necessary action against all liable parties in the demise of one of the locals.
The mother has been identified as Fathimath Shiuna, Zamaanee Villa.
Besides calling to take action against all liable parties, the council also demanded improving health sector services in the island to avoid repetition of similar incidents in the future.
“Gaafu Alifu Hospital is the only hospital for the entire local population of Northern-Huvadhu atoll, tourist resorts in the area, Koodoo Fisheries Complex, and Kooddoo Airport,” the council highlighted, adding the hospital must have the confidence of the public and everyone who acquire its services.
Despite the government’s significant expenses towards health sector improvements, effective management and resulting benefit to the public can only be ensured by stronger accountability of the relevant actors and stringent action from the government.
The council has urged both the Ministry of Health and Maldives Medical Council to expedite investigative efforts.
Hundreds of Vilingili locals took the streets of the island following the incident, demanding swifter action and improvement of the island’s hospital.
The demised woman, Shiuna’s husband, Shifaz Zahir had spoken with ‘Sun’ Online and shared his concerns about the hospital and the island’s health services as well.
