The Maldivian government has strongly condemned remarks by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggesting Palestinians should establish their state in Saudi Arabia rather than in their own homeland.
Maldivian Foreign Ministry, via a statement on Sunday, expressed its strongest condemnation of the irresponsible and provocative statement by Netanyahu.
The government also affirmed Maldives’ unwavering solidarity with Saudi Arabia and categorically rejected statements that threaten Saudi Arabia's sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.
“Such statements constitute a clear violation of international law and the United Nations Charter,” the statement read.
The government also reiterated its steadfast support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and called upon the international community to take a firm stance against such provocative statements that undermine regional stability.
“Such statements not only violate the sovereignty of Saudi Arabia, but also represent a continued denial of the rights of the Palestinian people,” the statement stressed.
Saudi Arabia has also dismissed Netanyahu’s remarks as an effort to divert attention from the consecutive crimes committed by the Israeli occupation against Palestinians in Gaza.
