Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed has stated that the government is closely monitoring Maldivian students studying in the Middle East and providing necessary assistance.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Minister Haidar highlighted efforts being undertaken to ensure the safety of Maldivian students in the Middle East. He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued advisories since the start of the war, sent to students via email. Students have been urged to register at the nearest diplomatic missions for safety and support, he added.
According to the Minister, a total of 75 Maldivian students are studying in the Middle East, including 42 in Egypt, 21 in United Arab Emirates, 10 in Türkiye, and two in Saudi Arabia. He said a helpline has been established to assist students, with a WhatsApp number available for direct communication with the ministry for students in Egypt.
The minister said students may resume studies without fines or penalties in the case of a war-related suspension of studies. The government is also facilitating travel for some students to Maldives during university spring breaks.
