Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has confirmed that 41 hectares have been reclaimed from Rasmale’ Site A. A total of 1,009 hectares is planned to be reclaimed for Rasmale’, with a total of 137.5 hectares to be reclaimed for Site A.
In a post of social media, MACL provided the update of the project by stating 41 hectares have been successfully reclaimed, representing 30 percent overall progress. The works are being carried out using Cristóbal Colón, one of the world’s largest Trailer Suction Hopper Dredgers, with a capacity of 46,000 cubic meters, operated by Jan De Nul.
The reclamation work commenced on the 1st of December this year. The government has contracted three parties to do the complete reclamation work under this project, with the overall implementation being divided into 12 phases. The government has confirmed that with the utilisation of the two additional dredgers brought by MACL, the progress of the project has stepped up significantly.
A noteworthy aspect of the project has been the deployment of one of the world's largest Trailer Suction Hopper Dredgers, the "Cristóbal Colón,". With the activation of the dredger on the 1st of December, the government has forecasted the progress of reclamation to accelerate threefold.
The landmark Rasmale’ project is the nation’s largest reclamation project, and the city is being developed as an eco-city. Once the reclamation work is completed, the government’s housing initiatives along with other economic projects are scheduled to be carried out according to the Rasmale’ Masterplan. The government commenced the development of Rasmale’ as an eco-city in 2023.
