Reduction in Block Grant hinders council’s scheduled services: HA. Atoll Council

The Haa Alif (HA) Atoll Council has stated that the reduction in the block grant allocated to them from the state budget has led to difficulties in providing public services included in the council’s work schedule.
In a press release issued yesterday, the HA Atoll Council noted that the state budget has allocated 2.6 million Rufiyaa to the council for this year. The council emphasized that even when looking at the next three months, this amount is insufficient to cover staff salaries and administrative expenses. They further described this as a significant administrative challenge to the council’s operations.
The council stated that the determination of such a budget as a state block grant has resulted in obstacles to delivering the community-related services planned in this year’s work schedule. They added that the budget passed by the council for this year included activities designed to bring economic benefits and social well-being to the citizens.
The HA Atoll Council mentioned that upon seeking permission from the Ministry of Finance to conduct these activities—following advice from the Local Government Authority (LGA)—they were instructed not to proceed with them.
“Therefore, to ensure that the services the council must provide to the citizens are delivered uninterrupted and in the spirit of the decentralization system, this council calls upon the relevant institutions to resolve the budget difficulties so that the council’s activities can be carried out,” the HA Atoll Council’s statement read.
