MDP condemns Government decision to restrict visitation privileges for Nasheed

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned the Government’s decision to restrict visitation privileges for jailed former President Mohamed Nasheed.
A statement released by the Party stated that Maldives Correctional Services had restricted visitation privileges for Nasheed’s extended family abruptly, citing that this was deeply concerning.
The statement added that there were no reasons given for such a measure and that the decision had been informed to the family via a phone call. The statement noted that only the spouse, children and parents were allowed to meet Nasheed and that his extended family has been exempted from visitation.
The statement said that the visitation rights were a basic right granted under the Constitution and International laws and noted that the trial carried out against Nasheed was a flawed one and unjust.
The statement concluded by appealing to the Government to stop such actions and called on relevant authorities to review the issue.
