Lawyers seek Civil Court order to halt all construction work in Malé

Local lawyers have filed a case with the Civil Court seeking an order to halt all construction work in capital city Malé, until the state’s safety code is completed.
The case comes after it was revealed on Sunday that the code remains incomplete and that 14 guidelines are yet missing. The lawyers have asked the court for an order to halt all construction work in Malé for 30 days.
The fact was revealed after a 7-year-old girl was hit by a bag of cement, which fell from a construction site on Sunday. She went through multiple surgeries before succumbing to her injuries on Monday.
The case was filed by lawyers at two local law firms – Wisham and Co, and Riza Shafneez and Co – as well as lawyers Aryj Hussain and Sofiyya Thaufeeq.
The incident has sparked discussion over how safety guidelines, while incomplete, are not enforced at local construction sites.
The state has suspended all licenses given to W Construction, the contractor for the building from which the cement bag had fallen on the little girl.
The government and the city council are also reviewing conditions at sites in Malé.
