Mohamed Nasheed, the speaker of the people’s majlis, has made fun of local island residents at today’s Parliament sitting, by saying that they only visit Male’ for entertainment purposes. He has said that they travel to Male’ since the islands don’t offer any source of entertainment.
This was said during a discussion of the motion presented by Thoddu constituency Member Hassan Shiyaan, to equalize the electricity costs between the local islands and Male’.
During the discussion, the Chairperson of the Committee on Decentralization said that it is crucial to understand why local island residents travel to Male’ despite the fact that the city’s educational and medical facilities has advanced significantly. Nasheed responded by making the statement.
However there are few employment prospects on the islands, and health care system of the country still depends on IGM Hospital located in the capital.
