A contract has been awarded to the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to allocate the land and oversee the development of a modern nursery in Hulhumale’ under the Chinese government's grant assistance.
The nursery is being developed to support one of the key environment pledges of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, to plant five million tree across the Maldives under a tree planting programme. The agreement was signed by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim on behalf of the Ministry, and HDC Managing Director Mohamed Mauroof Jameel.
According to the Environment Ministry, the design phase for a 55,000-square-foot facility has already been completed. The nursery will feature a laboratory, training rooms, an office section and a greenhouse. The Ministry said the nursery will produce the trees needed for the five million tree planting programme and will continue to produce trees under the supervision of the HDC even after the conclusion of the programme.
The five million tree planting initiative has so far received 6.6 million pledges. The Environment Ministry is planning to hold tree planting activities in all inhabited islands across the country.
