Exiled Former President Mohamed Nasheed joined protests against the expansion of Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom.
The jailed former president, who has sought asylum in the UK after being released to go abroad for medical treatment, joined the protest alongside members of various environment protection agencies and raised his voice against the potential negative repercussions to the environment that would result from Heathrow Airport’s expansion project.
Foreign media reports that fifteen people had been arrested during the protest.
Meanwhile, four councils of London and the international non-governmental environmental organisation Greenpeace have warned legal action against the government should they go ahead with the airport expansion.
According to the media, the London councils and Greenpeace had declared in a 33-page letter to the minister of UK’s Department for Transport that the proposed expansion project of Heathrow Airport is unlawful as it is to be proceeded without the mandatory discussions.
Media further reports that the UK government has assured to take no action against the ongoing protests over the airport expansion project.
