Maldives FA calls off vote after govt row over Charter

FAM in a statement said the congress had been cancelled because of the relevant government authorities failed to provide the necessary approvals for the meeting. "Despite the efforts of FAM, FIFA and AFC, the aforementioned approvals were not delivered in a timely fashion thereby forcing this last minute cancellation," the statement read. FAM also said it would share detailed accounts of the situation with FIFA and AFC. "...In parallel to this, the FIFA and AFC representatives will make a joint report on meetings held with the FAM Normalisation Committee, the Minister of Youth and Sports, as well as the Minister of Home Affairs these past two days in Male. Based on this information, the relevant bodies - such as the FIFA Emergency Committee - will discuss the appropriate way forward." The dispute arose after the home ministry claimed that FAM’s new Charter -- adopted in May -- was not forwarded to the ministry, an allegation denied by FAM. The ministry is of the view that, therefore, the amended Charter cannot be implemented. The Attorney General earlier Thursday backed the home ministry’s stand, claiming that the FAM election should not go ahead per current guidelines regulating the operation of clubs and associations in the Maldives. The Attorney General provided hos legal opinion upon request by the sports ministry. Maldives Olympic Committee president Mohamed Shaweed -- already the chair of the FAM Normalization Committee -- was scheduled to a referendum Thursday night as the sole candidate vying for the post of FAM president. However, Home Minister Umar Naseer had argued that the MOC and FAM cannot have a common chief. MOC Chairman is the “parent” of all sports activities in Maldives and football is just one of the games, Umar pointed out. “Nowhere around the world has one person serving as the heads of both Olympic and football associations. If that happens in the Maldives, this country will become the first where such a thing comes to pass,” the minister said, adding that “such a precedent would amount to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court serving as the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court”. “It cannot be under the structure of sports,” Umar elaborated, though Kuwait previously head a common chairman for both the country’s Olympic committee and football association. The mandate of the FAM Normalisation Committee, which was established last December and has already been extended by the FIFA Executive Committee on last month, officially ends on 31 October 2015.
