Economic Minister Mohammed Saeed have said that handing over Ibrahim Nasir International Airport to GMR was a huge crime committed by the government of Mohamed Nasheed.
Speaking at the budget oversight committee, Minister Saeed said that giving the airport to GMR was the biggest financial crime committed in the history of Maldives. Mohamed Saeed said that we should talk about this because giving the airport to GMR for 25 years was a crime of huge scale.
Minister said that the current government is developing INIA with a systematic plan which will benefit the country. Saeed said that when MDP government gave the airport to GMR, the company even took loans from foreign companies with sovereign guarantee from Maldives.
Minister Saeed said that there are no details of this transaction in the government even. He further said that, it was a culture in previous government to look the other way if someone within the government is involved in corruption. However, he said that President Yameen takes action against everyone who are involved in corrupt activities no matter who it is. He further said that even though the airport is being developed by foreign companies now, even Maldivian companies will get some work experiences during the development.
