“We must build a tourism industry that is resilient, competitive, and future-ready,” declared Maldives’ Minister of Tourism and Environment, Hon. Thoriq Ibrahim, at ITB Berlin 2025. Speaking at the “Next Chapter of Maldives Tourism – Berlin Edition” seminar hosted by MMPRC/Visit Maldives, the Minister outlined the government’s commitment to investment-friendly policies, technological integration, and long-term tourism growth.
Held on March 4 at Hybrid Studio 5.3, the seminar brought together key government officials, industry leaders, and global travel trade representatives to discuss the future of Maldives tourism, market expansion, and sustainability. The event opened with an engaging video presentation showcasing the Maldives as a world-class destination.
Industry Leaders Outline the Future of Maldivian Tourism
The seminar featured five prominent speakers who provided insights into tourism development, sustainability, and marketing strategies:
- Hon. Minister Thoriq Ibrahim stressed the need for policy reforms, investment incentives, and adapting to evolving traveler expectations. He emphasized:
"Our guests today are not the same as those who visited us decades ago. We must harness technology to not only improve efficiency but also to build an industry that is resilient and future-ready."
- Vice Chairman of MATI, Mr. Hussain Afeef, highlighted private sector contributions to sustainable tourism, emphasizing the importance of eco-friendly resort development and conservation initiatives.
- MMPRC CEO & MD, Mr. Ibrahim Shiuree, discussed Visit Maldives' global marketing efforts, reaffirming:
"The Maldives has been the World’s Leading Destination for five years in a row, and we are committed to maintaining this status through innovation, sustainability, and cultural tourism."
- Advisor to the President on Tourism Development, Mr. Ibrahim Khaleel, emphasized collaboration between the government and private sector to drive sustainable growth.
- MMPRC Chairperson, Mr. Abdulla Giyas Riyaz, spoke on shifting traveler interests and the role of international media, stating:
"Every visit to the Maldives contributes to a sustainable future, from solar-powered resorts to marine conservation programs."
New Direct Flight from Germany to the Maldives Announced
A major highlight of the seminar was the announcement of a new direct flight route between the Maldives and Germany by Maldivian, the national carrier. This development is expected to significantly boost tourism and enhance economic ties between the two countries.
