The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare has announced that 478 farmers have completed training programmes over the past two years under a nationwide initiative to strengthen the Maldives’ agriculture sector.
Training sessions were conducted across 28 islands, providing participants with practical skills in hydroponics, greenhouse cultivation, and other modern farming methods. The programmes also offered technical guidance aimed at improving productivity and promoting more efficient, climate-resilient agricultural practices.
The ministry further encouraged farmers to increase the value of their harvests by processing fruits and vegetables into products such as juices, jams, and other food items. Officials noted that value addition not only increases income but also reduces losses caused by crop spoilage, contributing to greater financial stability for farmers.
According to the ministry, these efforts form part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise the agriculture sector and enhance national food security.
