The authority of judges lies in the legal power to adjudicate cases, and not in exercising power over others, Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee Mohamed has said.
He made the remarks at the swearing-in ceremony of Ibrahim Mahir, who has been appointed as a High Court judge.
Welcoming the newly sworn-in judge, the Chief Justice expressed appreciation for Mahir’s previous services at the Civil Court and the Family Court.
In his address, the Chief Justice highlighted the importance of maintaining high disciplinary and ethical standards within the judiciary. He stressed that judges must provide the highest level of service to all who come before the courts to seek services. He advised judges to avoid misusing the authority vested in them.
"In fact, being a senior official of a court is not about having authority over others. The authority of judges is the legal powers they hold to apply by law. Beyond that, nothing else must be done in the court environment," he said.
The Chief Justice further noted that differences of opinion among judges are not inherently a problem. However, he urged that priority should always be given to finding constructive solutions.
The Chief Justice also highlighted that judges should maintain good character and adhere to strict ethical standards.
The oath of office was administered by Supreme Court Justice Abdulla Hameed, with Chief Judicial Administrator Amjad Musthafa also in attendance.
