A monument commemorating the centenary of Majeediyya School will be unveiled next year, the Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Skills Development, Dr Ismail Shafeeu, announced as the Maldives approaches a historic milestone in its scholastic evolution.
Speaking at a special assembly for the institution's 99th anniversary, Minister Shafeeu highlighted that Majeediyya must remain an "exemplary paradigm" for the national education system, uniquely positioned to model the instruction of future generations.
Preparations for the 100th anniversary are already visibly underway. “Under the special directive of the President [Dr Mohamed Muizzu] and the guidance provided to me, the parking area situated on the western side of Majeediyya School has been repurposed, and construction on the monument commemorating the institution's centenary has officially commenced,” Minister Shafeeu stated.
This structural development coincides with broader pedagogical reforms, including the ‘Bingaa’ character-building programme and a renewed commitment to practical competencies and vocational training.
The campus is set for further enhancements, including a new 40-classroom facility featuring the nation’s first smart classrooms, a project previously signalled by President Muizzu. Simultaneously, the historic Dar al-Uloom building, a bedrock of Maldivian education since 1952, will be transformed into an educational museum.
Since its founding as Madrasat al-Saniyya on 19 April 1927 under Sultan Mohamed Shamsuddin III, the institution has evolved from a cohort of 69 students to a coeducational body of over 1,300. To align the school with contemporary digital standards, Minister Shafeeu concluded the assembly by launching the institution’s modernised website and YouTube channel.
