Gov’t opens new housing opportunity regardless of spouse’s property ownership

The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has announced that individuals may now apply for a plot of land under the "Goathi Gedhoru" programme—even if their spouse already owns housing.
The long-anticipated rule change was officially gazetted on 4 March, fulfilling a key promise made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in this year’s Presidential Address.
The President had emphasised the need to eliminate barriers preventing married couples from securing land, particularly where one spouse already holds property, calling it essential to guarantee every family their own home.
Applications are now open until 30 April through the government’s online portal, "Boahiyaa."
The initiative will allocate 1,250 square feet plots from Rasmale’ to eligible applicants under two categories—residents of Male’ and those from other islands currently residing in the capital.
With the change to the criteria, prior land or flat ownership by a spouse will no longer disqualify an applicant.
