His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation within the Commonwealth on climate resilience, concessional financing, and sustainable debt solutions.
In a message marking Commonwealth Day, the President stated that the Commonwealth has long stood as a testament to the power of unity in safeguarding peace, promoting good governance, advancing sustainable development, and strengthening international cooperation.
Referring to this year’s theme, “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” the President emphasised the importance of collective commitment in addressing global challenges. He added that the theme embodies the spirit of unity and partnership that defines a Commonwealth “fit for purpose”.
President Dr Muizzu noted that, for the Maldives, this year’s theme aligns closely with national priorities, including climate resilience, education mobility, sustainable tourism, digitalisation, and ensuring that these benefits reach every community. He added that, as a Small Island Developing State, the Maldives remains particularly vulnerable to the growing impacts of climate change and external economic shocks.
Highlighting the 77th anniversary of the Commonwealth, the President reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening cooperation within the organisation so that every nation, regardless of size, can thrive.
He further noted that this year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting will provide an important opportunity to renew shared commitments. President Dr Muizzu added that the Maldives looks forward to actively engaging in efforts to deliver meaningful outcomes for the Commonwealth family.
