Transparency Maldives (TM) has said that the fairness and independence of Nasheed’s trial is questionable.
A press release issued by TM has noted that the declination of an appeal and refusal to give the defense lawyers enough time to prepare as to why it is questionable.
It also states that there were inconsistencies in the trial which includes the fact that the two of the three judges on the bench have testified against President Nasheed on previous occasions.
The press released called for extending the time period to go for an appeal. And to respect the international treaties that have been signed by the Maldives. TM also requested the citizens to proceed peacefully without endangering the national security.
The former president is currently in jail after being sentenced after his trial.
