Ali Zahir, one of the lawyers of Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdullah, has stated that the Sheikh’s continued detention with no investigation was extremely concerning and the detention was an injustice.
He made the statement in a post made on his facebook account. Ali Zahir said that even though a case has been filed against the Sheikh, no trials were carried out and as such this was an injustice.
His facebook post noted that the panel to oversee Sheikh Imran’s case had been drawn up and that the court premises were ready for the trial. Ali Zahir added that criminal who had committed bigger crimes were allowed to roam free during the trial. However, he said that Sheikh Imran had been arrested on the basis of what he said and therefore, such a detention was not warranted.
Sheikh Imran was arrested on 1st May on suspicion of inciting unrest. The state had filed terror charges against the Sheikh, which he had denied.
His family had expressed concern over his lengthy detention affecting his health. As such, Imran uses many long term medication and has severe spinal issues.
Recently, UN had appealed not to detain individuals without conducting proper trials.
