Attorney General’s (AG) Office, on Monday, announced the creation of a committee tasked with reviewing and revising agreements and loans which impinge on the economic independence or sovereignty of Maldives.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the AG Office to provide information regarding the legal framework within which the 100-day pledges of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih are to be fulfilled.
The committee will co-operate with the relevant government authorities to assess the extent to which detrimental agreements can be altered and work to renegotiate terms wherever possible. The committee will also ensure that agreements are in accordance with the law.
Loan agreements, sovereign guarantees, tourism related agreements and general service agreements will be investigated by the committee.
The number of members of the committee nor their identities have yet been revealed.
The government of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom took USD 3.7 billion in loans and guarantees out of which USD 1.4 billion was attained from China.
