Neonatologists
Neonatologists are doctors who typically work in a hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and are specially trained to treat critically ill and serious conditions in newborns. Their primary responsibilities include:
Treating High-Risk Newborns: Providing care for serious illnesses, including issues arising from prematurity or underdeveloped organs (e.g., lungs, heart), severe infections (sepsis), congenital malformations, respiratory distress and breathing problems, and treating low birth weight infants.
Performing Medical Procedures: Carrying out necessary medical tests and treatment procedures, including providing breathing support (ventilation), inserting intravenous (IV) lines, and monitoring vital signs.
Delivery Room Care: Attending high-risk deliveries (e.g., C-sections, multiple births, or maternal health issues) to provide immediate care and perform resuscitation if needed.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Working with a multidisciplinary team, including neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists, surgeons, and social workers, to manage the care of newborns.
Supporting Families: Consulting with parents, sometimes before the baby is born (antenatal consultation), informing them about the baby’s condition and treatment plan, and providing emotional support.
