Maafaru Airport opens apron extension and breaks ground on new terminal building

Maafaru International Airport has officially opened its newly expanded apron and launched the next phase of its terminal development project.
The apron extension was completed by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which was awarded the contract by Maldivian on August 11 last year. The MVR 29.85 million project included the demolition of 453 square meters of fire road, removal of the top layer of sand from 18,660 square meters, sub-base preparation, grading and compaction of 4,047 square meters, and installation of an airfield lighting system.
The expanded apron was inaugurated on Saturday, alongside the groundbreaking of a new terminal building. A Chinese company has been contracted to construct the two-storey terminal, which will span 12,000 square feet and include additional lounges, upgraded office facilities, and expanded passenger services.

Island Aviation Services Deputy Managing Director Ali Saleem told state media that the airport can now accommodate up to 35 aircraft simultaneously. He noted that while Maafaru already has a runway capable of handling the largest aircraft, terminal expansion is essential to match growing demand.
Maafaru is the Maldives’ second-largest international airport after Velana International Airport and remains the top destination for private jet arrivals.
