The Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed met with TikTok’s Metapsa Regional Head of Government Relations and Public Policy, Emir Gelen, during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, to discuss income-generating opportunities for Maldivian content creators on the platform.
The talks focused on enabling local creators to monetise their content, aligning with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s manifesto commitments to empower youth through digital platforms.
This follows an earlier visit by a TikTok delegation to the Maldives, where discussions were held with Ministry officials. Minister Saeed emphasised that partnerships with global platforms like TikTok will enhance market access for Maldivian creators and contribute to economic growth.
The government aims to strengthen ties with TikTok to achieve tangible outcomes, with the Minister also engaging regional offices to maximise benefits. Additionally, Saeed noted that the Chinese government has offered support in facilitating these efforts.
The move signals a growing focus on digital entrepreneurship as a key driver of the Maldives’ economic development.
